![]() ![]() During this time, the entire crew has been suffering from the effects of isolation while onboard Leonov, and Floyd's family has begun to deteriorate, and his wife finally decides to leave him. Chandra, was responsible for Hal's design, and manages to get the computer up and running, but Floyd distrusts the doctor and fears that Hal might malfunction again, putting everyone's life in jeopardy. Discovery is found to be in better shape than they had originally counted on, but they cannot determine what happened to the astronauts once on board, and thus learn nothing new about what happened ten years ago. Leonov reaches orbit around Jupiter unchallenged by the Tsien, but must still face several difficulties in space. Floyd and the crew of Leonov investigate, and discover an alien life-form was responsible for its destruction. An international incident is avoided, however, as the Tsien is suddenly destroyed. The crew aboard Leonov watches as the Chinese astronauts cleverly land upon the surface of Jupiter's moon Europa, clearly intending to use the ample water supply there as a means of fuel in order to reach the Discovery long before Leonov and claim it as salvage. As Leonov approaches, still millions of miles from Jupiter, a message from home informs them that a Chinese ship, Tsien, is going to arrive at Jupiter long before Leonov will have a chance to do so. The ship is also supposed to investigate the mysterious monolith similar to the one once found hovering over Tycho crater on the moon.įloyd is brought out of hibernation early by a sudden and unexpected emergency. Leonov is to board the now deserted Discovery and determine what caused the malfunction of the ships computer, known as Hal. Though the journey is long, Floyd and several other Americans are put into hibernation for much of the journey. Heywood Floyd is recruited by his government and Russia's government alike in order to accompany space shuttle Leonov's crew to Jupiter to determine what happened to American spacecraft Discovery ten years earlier. Clarke as a sequel to one of his most popular books. The Europans start a small settlement next to the remains of the ship, aptly nicknaming the area, Tsienville."2010: Odyssey Two", is a novel of space and scientific exploration, written by legenday science fiction writer Arthur C. By 2061, the native Europans have stripped Tsien of all metal, which is a material extremely rare in pure form on Europa. The settlement of Tsienville is established on Europa using wreckage from the Tsien spacecraft. The crew discovers what’s left of the Tsien, and they lay a wreath in memorial of it. It warms Europa and melts its new seas for some years, with the Tsien wreck adrift on the seas.Ī half century later, the Galaxy crashes in 2061. In 2010, Jupiter transforms into a mini-sun called Lucifer. The only survivor radios a message which the Leonov picks up in 2010, but the survivor is never heard from again. However, shortly after the Tsien landing, a Europan lifeform, apparently attracted by Tsien's powerful lights, broke through the ice destroying the ship, and killing all but one crew member. Its plan was to use Europa's water supply to refill propellant tanks for further enabled spaceflight. This action ignites a host of all sorts of reactions from the US and the Soviets.Ĭhina’s plan was to make the Tsien look like a space station, but once they added the boosters, it shot across space bypassing the Leonov. The Tsien expends all of its propellant to reach Jupiter, and makes a perfect landing on its moon, Europa. In the three-way superpower space-race to Jupiter: the USA builds Discovery 2 the Soviets launch the Leonov a year early and China orders the Tsien, a Chinese Earth-orbiting space station, to unexpectedly leave orbit on a secret mission around the time of the Leonov's departure. (Note: "Tsien" uses the Wade-Giles romanization method modern Mainland Chinese uses the Pinyin method, in which "钱学森" would be written as "Qian Xuesen".) The Tsien is named after Chinese rocket engineer Tsien Hsue-shen (1911–2009). ![]()
